Roland Garros Results- Day 3

The 3rd day in Paris started with some rain, but as the day went on, the weather improved and all the matches were completed in the tight schedule. Gael Monfils and Jo Wilfried Tsonga impressed their home crowd and both won. Tsonga had to go to 4 sets, while Monfils lost only 6 games. Novak Djokovic's opponent, Nicolas Lapentti, retired while down a set and a break. Tuesday was miserable for the American men, as Bobby Reynolds, Mardy Fish and James Blake were all thwarted by Europeans. Juan Martin del Potro, Tommy Robredo, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Phillip Kohlschreiber all advanced to the second round. Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Sam Stosur all moved on with easy wins, but 10th seeded Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams, the 2nd seed, had to work much harder for their victories. Serena needed 9 match points to earn her win, and Wozniacki had to recover from a less than brilliant 2nd set to win the decider. Anabel Medina Garrigues, Aleksandra Wozniak and Sybille Bammer all won easily, while Maria Jose Martinez and Jelena Dokic lost the 1st set and came back.
