Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who have been the 2 best clay courters so far in 2009, both won easily in their opening matches at the Madrid Masters. In the 1st game of the 2nd set, Djokovic had a nasty fall, making tennis fans' hearts stop around the world. After a few minutes of rest though, Novak returned from the injury and ousted Oscar Hernandez. David Ferrer was upset by Juan Monaco, while Andy Roddick fougt back from an embarrasing 1st set to win in a nailbiter against Tommy Haas. Juan Martin del Potro, Nikoly Davydenko and Gilles Simon all won easy straight-setters. James Blake and Stanislas Wawrinka both won in close matches. In women's action, Dinara Safina cruised to victory, but her compariot, Elena Dementieva was upset by Amelie Mauresmo. Another Russian, Svetlana Kuznetsova, was unexpectedly defeated by Alona Bondarenko, and Victoria Azarenka trounced Peng Shuai. Patty Schnyder and Nadia Petrova played 1 of the best matches of the tournament, with Schnyder grinding out a victory in the 3rd set tiebreak.
