Safina ascends to number 1

Dinara Safina became the number 1 player in the world on Monday. This is the 1st time the Russian has ever been number 1, and the first time a brother and sister have both reached the number 1 position. Marat achieved the feat many years ago, after his U.S. Open victory. Dinara has reached the finals of 2 of the last 4 Grand Slams, but she has never won one. Safina takes Serena Williams place, even though Serena has won the last 2 Grand Slams. Williams' first round exit in Marbella catapulted Safina to the top spot. Dinara must defend loads of points at Rome and Roland Garros, so look for more ranking changes to occur.
