Rafael Nadal didn't have to play a quarterfinal match to reach the semis, but 6 other players fought hard for a spot in the final 4 in Barcelona on Friday. In a matchup of the Fernando's, Fernando Gonzalez defeated Fernando Verdasco in 3 tough sets. Gonzalez, the 5th seed, won the first set. Verdasco, seeded 2nd, won the second, but dropped serve once to lose the decider. Nikolay Davydenko dropped the 1st set of his match with Radek Stepanek in a tie-breaker, but dominated the next 2 to win the match. David Ferrer defeated fellow Spaniard, Tommy Robredo, in 2 sets. Ferrer finished runner-up to Nadal in 2008 in Barcelona.
