While Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer impressed in their opening matches in Monte Carlo, the rest of the top 15 didn't look so great, as upsets continued. Nadal and Federer both won in straight sets, but Juan Martin del Potro was defeated in 3 sets by Ivan Ljubicic. 14th seeded Marin Cilic was dominated by Fabio Fognini, while Fernando Verdasco and Nikolay Davydenko both won comfortably. Nicolas Lapentti upset Marat Safin in 3 sets. Other winners included David Ferrer, David Nalbandian, Stanislas Wawrinka and Albert Montanes.
