Federer Achieves Historic Number 14 and Career Slam with French Open Title

If you're at a loss of words, join the club. Roger Federer won his 14th Grand Slam on Sunday when the Swiss deeated Robin Soderling in straight sets. With the magnificent victory, Roger achieves not only his record-tying 14th slam, but also "Career Slam", which is winning all 4 major titles. Prior to this year's French Open, Federer had lost to Nadal in the final 3 straight years, but that obstacle was out of the way when Soderling defeated Nadal in the Round of 16 last Sunday. Federer won the first 4 games of the match and danced around the court, crushing forehand winners, angled aces and crosscourt bakhands like the genius he is. After winning the opening set in less than half an hour, the early stages of the 2nd made fans shake in their boots. At 2-1 in the 2nd, a fan with a red Barcelona soccer flag sprinted onto the court, draping Federer with the flag and attempting to put a flag on him. After Federer pushed the intruder away, security guards handled the situation, carrying the phsycho off the court. The Swiss wasn't rattled though, as he went on to win that set in a tiebreak. Federer broke Soderling to start the 3rd, and service holds followed. Serving at 5-4, Federer was very tight, missing a swinging forehand volley 9 feet long. After saving a break point with a beautiful serve, FedEx had a championship point. The serve was out wide on the ad side and after Soderling missed the return, Federer fell to his knees and let the tears of joy fall. After being doubted because of a dissapointing start to the year, Roger Federer had just won his 14th Grand Slam title, tying Pete Sampras for the most majors of all time. In a post match interview, John McEnroe told Federer that the Swiss certainly has his vote for greatest of all time. Federer became just the 6th man ever to win all 4 slams, and the last man to do it before Roger, Andre Agassi, presented the 2 very deserving players with their trophies.
