Verdasco Takes Advantage of Rafa's Absence; Hoists Barcelona Trophy

Fernando Verdasco suffered an embarrassing loss to Rafael Nadal in Monte Carlo last week, but thanks to his conqueror's decision to sit out the Barcelona Open this week, Verdasco was able to one-up his runner-up performance at the season's opening clay event and go the distance in Spain. Verdasco earned a 3-set victory over Robin Soderling in Sunday's final, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

'Nando's win ensured that the Barcelona title stay with a Spaniard, as it has the past 8 years. Both Verdasco and Soderling will travel to Rome for the Masters event this week.

I wasn't planning to play this week so you can imagine my feelings right now. It's incredible, "said the Spaniard, seeded 5th entering the 500-point tournament.
