At one point last night, Kim Clijsters looked to be cruising to an easy victory over longtime rival and countrywomen Justine Henin, but the Australian Open finalist recovered after being down a set and 2-0 to even the match. After Henin won the 2nd set tiebreak 7-3, the two battled back and forth in the decider before Clijsters prevailed 8-6 in the 3rd set breaker.
Clijsters' final round opponent? The red-hot Venus Williams, who has improved her winning streak to 15 after easily beating Marion Bartoli 6-3, 6-4. Williams' and Clijsters' last match was a wild one, in the Round of 16 at the US Open where the Belgian won in 3 sets.
Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick both won on Wednesday to set up the first semifinal, but one was still to be decided on Thursday, and two big-servers occupied them. Robin Soderling dominated Mikhail Youzhny 6-1, 6-4 and Tomas Berdych found himself down a set to 10th seeded Fernando Verdasco before winning the next two 7-6 and 6-4 to reach the final 4.
