Jo-Wilfried Tsonga earned a tough 2-set win over Nicolas Almagro on Tuesday at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, 7-6 (5), 7-5. In another France vs. Spain matchup, Fernando Verdasco dominated Julien Benneteau 2 and 1, avenging Almagro's loss. 12th seeded Tommy Robredo, Michael Llodra and Albert Montanes all won, surrendering just 6 games. Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands advanced over Edwardo Schwank 6-3, 7-5.
4th seeded Marin Cilic got off to a very shaky start, losing the opening set to Igor Andreev 7-6 (4) before recovering to win the last 2 sets 6-1, 6-4. Tomas Berdych made the switch to red clay look easy, crushing Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-0, continuing his stellar play from Miami. Stanislas Wawrinka, seeded 13th, and Jurgen Melzer, 15th, each won in 2 sets to reach the 2nd round, while Florent Serra and Victor Troicki had to go the distance to earn their victories.
