Shazza Drops Vika in Beijing; Rafa Brings Back the Checkerboard Shorts

Maria Sharapova continued her stellar play from last week in Japan when she defeated 9th seeded Victoria Azarenka in 3 sets in the 2nd round of the China Open. The Russian won the 1st set 6-3 but lost the 2nd in a tiebreak. Sharapova recovered to take the 3rd 7-5. Other winners included Elena Dementieva, Serena Williams, Vera Zvonareva and Flavia Pennetta. Jelena Jankovic was upset by Shuai Peng.

Unfortunately for the tennis world, Rafael Nadal's 1st round win in Beijing marked the return of his signature checkerboard shorts. Rafa barely edged Marcos Baghdatis, and the heinous shorts probably didn't help his cause. Nadal paired the bottoms with a green version of his polka-dotted U.S. Open shirt. Other winners in Beijing included Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Verdasco and Marat Safin. Andy Roddick was upset by Lukasz Kubot.
