Serena Captures Doha; Takes Out Venus to go 5-0

Aside from the French Open and the US Open, Serena Williams did everything you could ask of a tennis player in 2009. She started off the year with a dominating run in Australia, but she faltered in the Roland Garros quarters. She recovered to take out her big sister Venus, the Queen of Grass, in the Wimbledon final. After falling in the U.S. Open semis, Serena went a perfect 5-0 in Doha at the Sony Ericsson Year-Ending championships to put a cherry on top of her magnifcent 2009. Serena beat noneother than Venus, 6-2, 7-6 (4) to win her first year-ending championship since 2001 and reassure the few doubters that she is the best female tennis player in the world. Williams will take home $1.55 million dollars to bring her 2009 prize money to a record 6.19 million. “It feels great,” said Serena, who improved her record against her sister to 13-10. “I totally didn’t expect to come here and win.”

Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez defeated Cara Black and Liezel Huber to take the doubles crown.
