Svetlana Kuznetsova placed a cherry on top of an unexpected yet remarkable run at Roland Garros by defeating Dinara Safina to win her 1st French Open championship, and 2nd Grand Slam title. In the early games of the openening set, the 2 Russians traded breaks, and continued to hold serve for several more games. Nearing the end of the 1st, Kuzzie broke Dinara's serve and won the set with powerful ground strokes and an incredible 1st serve percentage. Safina never recovered from her poor start, and the world number 1 continued to make errors and hit groundstrokes that lacked depth. On match point, Safina double faulted and Kuznetsova awkwardly rose her hands in the air. Following Svetlana's respectful and simple celebration, Dinara broke down, slamming her racket after her coach shot nasty and graceless looks at his pupil. Trying hard to cover up her prominent tears, Dinara congratulated Kuzzie on her incredible run while accepting her trophy from Steffi Graf. Safina is now 0-3 in Grand Slam finals.
